I can read the Gospels and get a clear picture of Jesus’ ministry up to and including his death and resurrection, thanks to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. But ever since I was a young girl one question persisted – What about the women?

In only 75 minutes, Writer and Director Adam Schnell answers this question with Woven, a one-act play, in which he meticulously blends six women’s (and one girl’s) points of view of pivotal events during Jesus’ ministry.

The rich portrayals of Dinah and Shuli (wives of Peter and Andrew), Hava (Dinah’s mother), Mary the mother of Jesus, Varda (Levi’s wife), their neighbour Judith, and young Emmeth, quickly swept me back to an ancient time. The actors were compelling in their struggle with the new reality of their hard-working husbands suddenly leaving their occupations and incomes behind to follow Jesus. The poignant tension between trust and doubt was keenly felt.

The women’s references to Peter, Andrew, Levi, and Jesus were so convincing I found myself tempted to look over my shoulder, fully believing they were there in the room. I wanted to run after Emmeth when she scampered away to rejoin a game of tag with Jesus.

The set design is simple, yet the simplicity is it’s beauty. I was mesmerized as the subtle set changes between scenes denoted an entirely new setting. The costumes add a layer of realism to each character’s societal status and lifestyle.

Woven is a thoroughly enjoyable immersive experience. I laughed, I cried, I loved every minute. Admission is free, which is a good thing because you are going to want see this play more than once. Performance times at First Alliance Church, Deerfoot Campus, are as follows:
